Task Manager terminates instantly

Have just spent hours trying to exorcise the many
adware/spyware/malware infections on my daughter's PC.
Its getting better!

One remaining problem is that every time I launch Task
Manager, something is causing it to exit. TM opens in its
normal window, but exits within a few seconds. Any ideas
about what is causing this???

More info:
Task Manager is actually being Minimised to the system
tray, and exits if I mouse over the icon.

Tried to run msconfig, but it is showing the same
symptoms - launches but exits almost immediately.

Maybe I'm paranoid, but it looks liek some evil code is
at work here???

I've run Norton and TrojanHunter with current signature
files. They are scanning clear. I agree its possible that
a virus is at work, but nothing is finding it!
Frustrating! I'm within a inch of reformatting this puppy.
Somebody stop me......

Its worse than all that. Scans with Norton AV and Trojan
Hunter [both with current sig files] find nothing, but I
agree that a process is running that scrams anything that
might be used to fix the problem.

Its not just Task Manager. msconfig.exe and regedit.exe
are terminated as soon as they are launched as well. It
feels like a brick wall of malware. I'm within an inch of
formatting this machine and starting over.

I have the same problem with my computer as well, except
with different programs. I've emailed a Microsoft person,
who gave me a ton of advice but none of it solved the
problem. I'll probably have to bring it to a tech expert.
