Please can you advise

In my Task Manager there is a process called 'svchost.exe' listed under
SYSTEM. Often when starting up the computer, this process seems to run for
ages, using up nearly all (c.80%+) of my CPU usage and therefore slowing
down the system to a snails pace - it can last up to 15-20 mins?

What is its function and if necessary can I stop the porcess without
damaging the system or loosing any data?

A colleague thought that it might possibly be part of the Operating System
and was searching for missing software/programs ? I have quite an old
system - massive beast with lots of stuff on it?

The first thing you need to do is identify what process or
processes are running under the instance of svchost.exe that is
slowing down your system.

Download and run this program from Microsoft.

Process Explorer for Windows v10.21
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx

In Task Manager, note the PID for the svchost.exe entry that's
causing the problem.
Launch Process Explorer and find the corresponding svchost
entry.
Right click on it and select Properties from the menu.
Click on the Services tab in the properties sheet that is
displayed.
You can now research the listed services to see if anyone is
experiencing the same problem.

Note: If you find that the problem instance of svchost is
running the
wuauserv service, you might want try the following;

Go to Microsoft Update and click Change Settings in the left
hand column.
In the right hand pane, scroll down to the bottom and put a
check mark in the box next to "Disable Microsoft Update
software and let me use Windows Update only". Hit the Apply
changes now button.

Keep in mind that if you disable Microsoft Update you
will have to go to the Office web site to obtain updates for
any Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook,
etc.) you may have installed on your computer.

Good luck
