Hard drive goes crazy

My hard drive often just goes off on its own, seeking for goodness knows what
for several minutes at a time, and absorbing all resourses of the system. I
often have to reboot to get it to stop. I've looked at the task manager
processes and several are jumping around in mem usage while this happens,
like svchost.exe. Any ideas? (XP Professional, Dell desktop system)

Have you checked Scheduled Tasks?

The Indexing Service can update records if the computer has been left
idle.

Which svchost.exe host have you in mind. If you the Process ID from Task
Manager and then use Process Explorer to get the command line.

Download Process Explorer.

For further information about Process Explorer see here:
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/SystemInformation/ProcessExplorer.mspx

It would be helpful if you could post the Command Line of the svchost
process generating the excessive CPU usage. In Process Explorer place
cursor on Process and select Properties, Image.

Hope this helps.
