Task Manager Processes

I used to run a previous version of windows and my
processes were limited to about 3. Now I run XP and am
curious as to what processes are vital and should never
be shut down. I would like to free up my CPU.

Did you install XP yourself, or did you buy a Dell,
Compaq, etc ? These preinstalled, manufacturers boxes
are *always* loaded up with extra stuff, and of course,
each brand is different.

It's up to you to find out what you have and whether you
want/need it. After that, you can start looking at windows
XP services and see what can be trimmed there.
