Task Manager processes

I am the sole user of a stand alone computer, and my Task
Manager often displays 2 or more instances of the same
process (e.g., Outlook.exe, cidaemon.exe). When I have
trouble re-starting Outlook, for example, I have to end
the process for all of the instances of Outlook before
it will restart.

Shouldn't there be only 1 instance of any given process?

Yes, with a few exceptions, there should only be one instance running.
Unless you mistakenly double, double click. Or you're impatient like me
and you don't think something is going to start and you double click again.
