How do I put the small icon with the pencil on my task
bar so that when I click it all the windws are reduced
and I see only the desktop?

unlock taskbar then right click select toolbars and check
quicklaunch. Read the help.

I find it quick and easy to right click the clock, then left click Show Desktop.

It didn't work. I found it in the recycle bin!

Create a text file in Notepad as follows:
[Shell]

Command=2

IconFile=explorer.exe,3

[Taskbar]

Command=ToggleDesktop



Save it as Show Desktop.scf then drag it to the Quick launch bar.
