My start menu and task bar have dissapeared. Can anyone please tell me how
to get it back? Ive tried reloading the win cd, but becuase the version i
have (must be with the updates) says its newer, it wont reload.
I cant remember deleting anything from the pc that would cause this. Any
suggestions would be superb!
Thx

Press CTRL + ALT + DEL and open the Task Manager.
Click on the processes tab
If you see an Explorer.exe right click on it and end process.
Click File > New task (run) > type "explorer.exe" without the quotes > press
enter
That should bring up your desktop
Reboot...

It seems to work fine after a reboot most of the time? I'm not sure why...

If it doesn't then restore to an earlier time. Instead of "explorer.exe" run
"%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe" for the prompt and that will
start the system restore process.

With respect to the issue with the newer version, you should make an
installation CD slipstreamed with SP2 if that's what is on your system.
Then you won't get that message, though search for solutions first.
Do a repair only as a last resort. To slipstream:

No problem and glad to have helped. I'm pretty sure that when you load (and
you probably don't want to know this) the explorer.exe manually and then
reboot that that's then becoming the next current control set in the
registry and that the earlier one had been corrupted for what ever reason.
So the reboot and it's continued working confirms that it's taken effect.
The reasons it could become corrupted are far to varied for the scope of a
newsgroup post but that's the reason that I suspect such is happening and
why it then works afterwards without any problems.
