My taskbar icons won't let me put them in the correct order. Had this
problem many years ago (early win 95 days). Can't remember the fix for it,
but I'm sure it's different for XP Pro. All latest updates have been
installed. Can anybody tell me what to do so I can put the icons in the
correct order that I want them in.
Thanks

Hi, JCO.

If you mean the terminology you used, then just open the programs in the
order you want their icons to appear in the Taskbar. They should line up,
left to right, in the order that you opened them. If you open MS Word, then
Quicken, then Outlook Express, you should see the Word, Quicken and OE
icons, left to right. If you then delete Quicken and open it again, the
order will become Word, OE, Quicken. If you want the icons in a different
order, then open the programs in a different sequence.

Is that what you meant?

Right click on the task bar and uncheck "Lock the Taskbar". You can now drag
the icons to wherever you want them.

The launch icons can be drag and dropped wherever you want them. Open
programs tabs (if that's what you're asking) are in the order you opened
them.

Are you talking about QuickLaunch items, on the left
(typically) next to the Start button ? If so, just drag
and drop them. Are you talking about SysTray items, on
the right, next to the clock (typically) ? If so those
items start in the order specified in the Registry. If
you're talking about actual Taskbar buttons, those run
left-to-right (typically) in the order that you start the
programs.

Good Luck !

Please clarify exactly what you're asking about. The order of the
icons on the task bar can not be controlled directly.

Do you mean the Quick Launch Bar? The System Notification Area
(aka the System Tray)?

Thanks everybody for your response:

I'm talking about the Quick Launch Icons. My tool bar is unlocked. I put
the icons in the order I want them to be. When I reboot, they all change to
an undesired order. Something is corrupted.

Do you relock the taskbar before you reboot?

Either way, the order will switch.
Also, it is not required to lock it down to maintain the order anyway. This
is not a simple configuration. This is a problem with the registry.
Thanks anyway.

Sounds like you want to edit the registry. OK. Heres a edit that will not
group or group the task bar icons. Your taskbar shortcuts may be set up in
the registry to go from left to right with the most used to the left. This
regedit romoves grouping. Hope it helps.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced\TaskbarGlomming
0 = Don't group
1 = Group

Quick Launch icons you can just drag around with the mouse (make sure
Taskbar is not Locked)

Yeah I know that. It wont help.
The problem lies with the ConShellCache
The Bag seems to be corrupted. Its much more than a single key. It would
be a whole series of keys that need to be deleted. The keys that control
the entire "Store". The Store refers to many items such as the Shellstate,
CabinetState, Bags, BagsMRU... it goes on.

Thanks anyway.
