Have the "Allow table to break across pages" tick box disappeared in Word
(XP)? I can only find an option that controls the row, not the entire table.
Does this means that it is impossible to control whether the whole table
shall be kept on one page?

There never was a setting such as you describe. You can select the entire
table and clear the check box for "Allow row to break across pages," which
will affect each separate row. To keep the rows together, you have to select
every row in the table except the last and Format | Paragraph | Line and
Page Breaks: Keep with next. See
