Having constructed a table with some 15 columns across, I now find that when
I try to resize the width of one column it affects the size of the adjacent
ones.

How can I avoid that? In another words: say, that I have 5 columns, 3 cm
wide and fill them with information. If I then try to make one of the
middle columns 4 cm instead, how can I do that without affecting the width
of the other columns and the information already in in them?
