Table of Contents

I am updating an existing document that has a table of contents within the
document. I have pressed F9 to update the table of contents and it saves
fine. But when I email the document the table of contents numbering system
changes to '3' in all of the fields... please help!

This is usually the result of opening an attachment in Reading Layout view
(Full Screen Reading view in Word 2007). There is nothing you can do on your
end except make suggestions to the recipient:

1. Suggest that the recipient not open the attachment directly but instead
save the attachment to the hard drive before opening. Since Reading Layout
view is used only for attachments opened directly, the problem will not
occur.

2. If the recipient is not willing to give up the convenience of opening
attachments directly, suggest that the recipient can disable Reading Layout
view (Tools | Options | General in Word 2003 and earlier; Office Button |
Word Options | Popular in Word 2007).

3. If the recipient is not willing to do this, either, then suggest that
he/she will have to update the TOC manually after switching to another view.
