Table of Contents

Why do I have to recreate the entire table of contents every time that I want
to adjust a setting (say increase an indent or add another level)?

Can't I just edit the existing settings?

You shouldn't have to recreate the TOC to modify the styles, and you can
edit the field code to add additional levels; see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/TOCSwitches.htm

Nope, it still changes each time that I try to edit it.

For example, I have a table of contents with only 1 level. Now, I highlight
the whole TOC, right click, select 'Edit Field', and click on the button to
do Advanced Field Options.

The TOC dialog pops up, but now there are up to 3 levels shown. So,
basically, I have to recreate the TOC from scratch.

What is going on?

Edit Field is misleading here; it does start from scratch. But you can edit
the field by hand (which is what I meant). Press Alt+F9 to view the field
code; then look at the article I referenced for guidance.
