Table of Contents - updating page numbers only

I want to update the page numbers only in my Table of Contents field, since I
have
changed some of the formatting of the text. However, when I tell Word to
Update Field, it doesn't ask if I want to update entire field or page numbers
only (it just updates the whole field). I want to do page numbers only--how
can I?

Thanks!
 
There are situations when you don't get to choose, for example on the
first update after the TOC has been created, or if headings have been
removed. I don't think there is a way around that.
