Table of Contents Numbering Issue

Word 2003 SP2 on Windows XP SP2
I have a customer who opens a Word document that has a TOC. The numbers all
appear correctly. If he goes to Print Preview or Prints the document all the
page numbers in the TOC show and print the same number. (That number changes
randomly?) If he then updates the TOC by pressing F9 the correct numbers are
restored to the document. But Print Preview or Printing reverts to all the
same number again. Happens with different documents so it's not a particular
document.

I have tried all the workarounds from Technet Article 912940. He does not
have tables or pictures in headers or footers as described in the Word MVP
article where all page numbers are zero. Have reinstalled Office, no change.

This problem is usually the result of having opened a document in Reading
Layout view. But printing or switching to Print Preview should update the
TOC field, which is the solution to that problem when it occurs, so it
sounds as if you are experiencing something different.

Issue has been resolved. It turns out that this document is over 10MB with
tons of graphical images. The document was apparently not loading fully
before the customer was pressing Print Preview before the TOC was updating
fully. That's why the number of pages repeated in the TOC was always
different.

Ah, makes sense. Thanks for the feedback!
