Table caption

Is there a way to have the caption of a table repeat when the table breaks
across pages, a bit like Heading Rows Repeat?

Sure there is.

Insert -> Reference -> Cross-Reference

Select Reference type: Table

and select the caption you want to duplicate.

Thanks Barb. But this is not quite what I was looking for. In order to insert
a reference, I'll have to break the table and if I do that the table no
longer refit itself if, say, a paragraph is deleted before the table started.

I was after something automatic like "Heading Rows Repeat".

If you put the table caption in the top (merged) row of the table and make
it a heading row, you will accomplish this.
