Tab several lines of text simultaneously.

Office 2003 on Win XP

I have a Word document with a column of numbers, say 1 - 100, on the LHS.
Against each number and two equal 10mm tab spaces from it, is a line of text.
Thus, there is a column of numbers and a column of text , spaced by say 20mm.
To increase each space by 10mm I select the start of each text line and
press Tab.
But, this is very time consuming.
How can I select the whole column of text and tab all lines equally in one go?

You can select any number of paragraphs and drag the tab setting along the
ruler to where you want it to be, but the most sensible option is to create
a paragraph style with the layout you want to achieve and apply it to all
the paragraphs.

In general, you should always only use a single tab character to indent text
and then position that tab stop in the desired location. In the current
situation, you could then select all the text and simply move the tab stop
(either from the ruler or via Format > Tabs). Note that it is often easier to
use a table when you want to organize text in columns.

See:
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/SettingTabs.htm

If you decide to keep your current tabs and want to add an extra tab
character, you can use Find and Replace to do this (^t represents a tab
character):
Select all the text you want to change.
In the Find what box, type ^t^t
In the Replace with box, type ^t^t^t
Click "Replace All" – select No if you are asked whether to search the
remainder of the document.

Correspondingly, you can use Find and Replace to replace your current 2 tab
characters with 1 (search for ^t^t and replace with ^t). Then you could
adjust the tab position.

Thanks everyone for your inputs.
The method of find and replace works for me.
I would try the other suggestions but don't know how to select ONLY the text
I want to move. When I click & drag to select I get the first column as well
but I don't want that to move.

In Word, you can select vertically by holding the Alt key and dragging.

But that's not necessary here because you're not moving the text, only the
tab stop, and you have to select all the affected paragraphs. From the
description, too, it sounds likely that what is wanted may be a hanging
indent.

Good point. (I have to admit I only read the most recent message from the
OP.)
