in word 2007, why does all lines of text appear double spaced?

in word 2007, all lines of text appear to be double spaced.

i switch the line spacing to 1.0, but it still appears to be
double spaced.

From the Home tab, right click on the Normal Style, click on Modify. This
should bring up a Modify Style Page. At the bottom of the page be sure to
click the radio button that says New Documents based on this template. Then
click on Format, Paragraph. Change the Spacing after from 10 to 0. Click
Okay, then Okay again. You should be set to single spacing now.
