Hello;
I am attempting to connect two machines in a LAN in my home. Both machines
are running XP Pro and are connected to the Internet via a DSL modem and a
NETGEAR router. Both machines can access the Internet OK and as far as I can
determine they perform fine. The machines are able to ping each other,
however, file sharing is not working. I am now trying to follow the network
set-up procedure on Carey Holtzman's web-site. When I right-click on the
Local Area Connection, per her instructions, and select Properties the
display shows the General and Advanced tabs. The Authentication tab is
missing. This discrepancy occurs on one machine only. The other machine's
display is OK. How do I fix this problem? Thanks for the help.

The Authentication tab only appears if the Wireless Zero Config
Service is running, if my memory serves me correctly.
( Yes, even for a wired ethernet connection. )

This will not have any effect on a wired connection using a regular
router, switch or hub which is not using 802.1x authentication.
( And your router is not using this. )

So the lack of authentication tab is not the actual cause of any problem.

If you want it to appear, go to start | run | services.msc
Find the Wireless Zero Config service, and start it.
Set the starup type to automatic.

Hello Ron;
That fixed the Authentication tab. As you point out, this is not the cause
of my networking problem. I will continue using Carey's network setup
instructions and come back to the group for help if required. Thanks for the
help. I do appreciate it.
Sincerely
Melvin
