lost Local Area Connection icon

I have just got hold of a Netgear DG834Gv3 ADSL router and I am having
problems with the setup. At the moment I am using a USB modem. On the help
site it says that my computer needs to be configured for DHCP. I have found
a step by step guide but have become stuck

· Select Start > Settings > Network Connections.

· Double-click the Local Area Connection icon to open the Local Area
Connection Status window.

I do not have a "Local Area Connection icon" in my network connections.

Any pointers very gratefully received.

Thanks

Hi
The Netgear DG834Gv3 ADSL is a modem Router combo its modem part has to be
connected to the Telephone line, and its output goes to a computers with
Network card.
If you do not have a configured network card in the computer there is No
Local Area Connection icon.
The USB port on the Router is a printer server to connect a USB Printer , it
would not work with a computer.
