I run XP using a 2gig AMD chip with over 256 RAM, and have more than 35% of
the hardrive free . . . I've run defrag and cleanup, but its still slow . . .
My screen saver animation always ran smoothly, now its "jerky" . . . when
switching back to the desk top the icons used to come up instantly, not they
too
come up slowly . . . ???
Thanks

What have you got running in the background? What does a scan with a
current antivirus program (meaning a version not earlier than 2002 and
using updated virus definitions) show? Also, remove spyware with Spybot
Search & Destroy from www.safer-networking.org and Ad-aware from
www.lavasoftusa.com. Be sure to update these programs before running
them. These programs are free, so run them both since they complement
each other. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal tools in
Safe Mode. You may also want to run CWShredder and HijackThis from
http://aumha.org/freeware.htm. Although CWShredder is no longer being
updated, it will still clean older variants of the CoolWebSearch
malware. Please read the instructions carefully. Also, make sure
you've visited Windows Update and applied all security patches. Do not
install driver updates from Windows Update. Make sure you are running a
firewall.

All good suggestions but additionally drop the windows defrag...go to
www.diskeeper.com and get a defrag tool that will do some good. My system
doubled its speed by using this program. I would not go back. My hard drive
is quite often loaded over 80% and still fast. I now use it on every computer
I get my hands on and always notice a big difference.
