system32\printer.exe

Hello,

I need a little help. My antivirus software found a virus and I have
deleted the file. I am running windows XP Professional and my antivirus is
NOD32. When I boot my computer I get a popup stating…â€Windows cannot find
‘C:\WINDOWS\system32\printer.exe’. Make sure you typed the name correctly,
and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start button, and then
click search.†I have tried searching for the file and I cannot find it
either on my computer or on the Windows Disk. Can someone help resolve this
problem?

Thanks for you assistance.

It is a relic of the virus. Perhaps the startup setup still attempts to
install the bogus file.
Msconfig will let you check the programs that are loaded during startup.

Adding to Jim advice, try to Download AutoRuns for Windows v8.73 and delete
the pre-mentioned infected files/folders from start up in the Run Key (
registry).

Make sure you scan in Safe mode and also for malware on your system.

Go to the start menu, run and type: msconfig and click OK. Go to the
startup tab and see if you can find a line referencing: printer.exe. If
there is, remove the mark from the box in front of the line. When you
reboot, there will be a notice--mark the box not to show it again.

Hi Lowell,
If you want to make sure the Ghost is gone, Download the Hijackthis and
send the report to one of
many
forums for analysis and troubleshooting:
When all else fails, HijackThis v2.0.2
(http://www.trendsecure.com/portal/en-US/threat_analytics/hijackthis.php) is
the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. Post
your log to:

Glad to help and you are welcome.
Good luck.
