system32\hal.dll missing or corrupt

after applying an update, I needed to reboot. Computer would just wait with
the cursor blinking after the PCI device listings. One forum suggested
Fixboot which led to this problem. I already tried the repair on the windows
knowledge page and after picking windows xp from the list I get the same
error. Tried attrib -H -R -S C:\Boot.ini sequnce listed in another forum and
get an invalid parameter error. I also tried a repair install but no previous
version of windows can be found so it tried to do a clean install which would
erase my hard drive. HELP!!
