System won't boot

I'm doomed! Yesterday my modem card slipped out of the slot. I
replaced it and now the system won't boot. When it first came back
up, the screen appeared with a BIOS error and I rebooted again. Now I
get an out of range error (I left the exact error msg at the office,
sorry) It indicated there was a H### and V### which leads me to
believe it was a monitor problem. In addition, it beeps - 8 times to
be exact.

I brought the unit home and plugged it in hoping it was just a failed
monitor. Now I don't even get the message on the screen about out of
range but it still beeps.

I can't even get into safe mode...

Any suggestions on how to proceed is GREATLY appreciated.

Without the exact error message it is difficult to diagnose. Also your
haven't told us what bios your computer uses. From the site below
http://www.pantherproducts.co.uk/Articles/Motherboard/BIOSbeep.shtml

Assuming it is an AMI bios the rror could be a display memory read/write
error. Which basically means that the video adapter is incorrectrly seated
or has faulty memory. But how did thememory card manage to 'slip' out of the
pci slot? It is secured with a screw on the back of the pc unit.

Hi Karen,

The beeps may help. You need to know exactly how many there are, and them
look it up in the motherboard manual. If you don't have one, you can
generally find one in pdf format on-line. It should tell you exactly what
the BIOS is seeing as being wrong.

What do you mean "slipped out of the slot"? Is this a laptop? From your
description, it sounds very much like you've got damaged hardware. The
beeps indicate that. You will need to take the machine to a good local
computer repair shop (not a BestBuy or CompUSA type of store). If the
machine is a laptop, call the mftr.'s tech support to determine what
should be done.

This is way before windows even starts to boot: At Power on the BIOS is
doing a check and cannot find the video card. In dealing with the modem
you have probably loosened that
