System won't--and I've tried--recognize any dvd/cd blanks or other

I can’t get my hp dvd writer / cd-writer combo (i.e. hp dvd writer 400c),
which is my dvd/cd burner, to recognize any blank or otherwise dvd or cd.
Since I’ve tried just about everything to get my Windows XP Home Edition,
using Nero 6, PowerISO, and DivX Player to watch and usually to burn to
dvd/cd, I’m trying to reinstall the drives Firmware, i.e. dvd400c_kh27, but
everytime I try to reinstall this Firmware, I receive this error message:
“The update program did not find any supported Hewlett-Packard drives on this
computer.â€
The above error message makes me wonder why—WHY?—wouldn’t my hp pavilion
a650y running an hp dvd writer / cd-writer combo that in effect is controlled
by a dvd400c_kh27 Firmware, and came with my system originally and worked
well for nearly four years now—Why won’t my system recognize the
reinstallation of this Firmware? Can anyone help me find the solution to
getting my burner working again with Nero 6?

P.S. For years now, my system has used and worked with Nero 6, DivX Player,
and only recently have I had problems. Such as in the past years,
occasionally something separates the burner form the system and it isn’t
recognized. I’ve tried everything. Bottom line: My system has the ability
to work with Nero 6, DivX Player, and with PowerISO. What am I doing or
what’s entered my system to corrupt that ability and that I can’t find to
correct it? I hope that if I reinstall the Firmware I can correct this
problem.

Please keep in mind that I’ve tried the obvious: e.g. System Restoration,
Non-Destructive and Destructive Recoveries (which work temporarily until
either Nero, PowerISO or DivX, either together, or by some lack of one or all
of them to work with something that’s causing a corruption in my system. I
don’t know how to isolate the problem, but know that it isn’t a hardware
issue, i.e. my burner is ruined and need another, because it works upon a
non-destructive if not a Destructive Recovery and stops working only after an
accumulation of other programs somehow corrupt it. I’d appreciate some help.

Why did you flash the firmware in the first place? to fix a problem?

I suspect you flashed the firmware with a corrupted image and
turned your burner into a big paperweight.

later.....
