System will not Boot

Wonder if some kind soul can point me in the right directions. My
Grandson's computer (Win XP Pro) will not allow him to boot or to safe mode
or to safe mode with command prompt.

Error message on booting is

Windows Could Not Start Because The following file is missing or corrupt
\WINDOWS\system32\config\SYSTEM

As he lives 200 km from me, I am having to try and fix this via phone, so
rather than a re-install of XP, is there some quick fixes I could try and
walk him through. Seems he does not have an emergency diskette either

Any particular reason you referred the OP to a site plagiarized from
Microsoft's Knowledge Base, rather than just pointing him to the original?

Thanks for those that gave some tips. I had Googled the error message as
well and got similar ones. They all look a bit daunting for a 10 year old
Geek to carry out without Grandpa looking over his shoulder! Looks like a
200 km drive coming up!

Thanks

Also, since you brought it up, any particular reason why you have referred
people to sites that contain plagiarized MS KB documents?

Any particular reason you don't ask the question to the other folks
who make reference to sites with plagiarized MS KB documents?

Might want to look at yourself before being critical of others so quickly.
