What is this unviewable directory? Where is it documented?
What is its subdirectory named _restore?

It contains the information stored as 'System Restore' points. You can
see its contents if you have Folder Options - View set to show Hidden
files, and *not* Hide Protected mode ones, but should not try to do
anything with it manually - unless you turn off System restore and
reboot, then delete everything left so as to give the restore system a
clean start
