It shows the "System volume informaiton" directory in C:\ on Xp pro. I think
it is a partition directory which should not be visible. any ideas?

That is the System Restore Data.
It is normal to be visible if you hare set to show hidden files.

hans,

The restore point archive of System Restore resides in the system volume information directory, which is a hidden system directory. This archive is protected by the system ACLs in NTFS.

The System Volume Information is the hidden, protected operating
system folder in which WinXP's System Restore feature stores
information used to recover from errors. It's really not a good idea
for you, or any utilities or antivirus applications, to directly
access the contents of that folder, unless you expect to have no
future use for the restore points, in which case it would be simpler
just to turn off the System Restore feature.

However, if you're confident that you know exactly what you're doing,
you can use the instructions in the KB Article below to hide the folder
again:

It is a superhidden one, and contains the System Restore points. Leave
it alone.
