Hello
Hoping someone can help me with the System Utilites BACKUP feature.
I have successfully installed this feature from the Win XP CD-ROM, and it seems to be a positive way to do backups.
I have ALWAYS had problems with System Restore not being able to go back and restore certain sites.
My problem with this "Backup" feature is that it wants to either backup to a floppy disk (which of course too small) or to a particular site in the directory.
It takes forever to locate where it save the backup to.
Does anyone know how to change the backup location to be able to send the backup to CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, or DVD-RW?
If this is not possible, does anyone else know a good program (freeware, hopefully) that can backup numerous programs?

Also, I have noticed how some people helping with questions suggessting cross-posting ... is this acceptable (and if so, how can I do this?), or is it considered not-acceptable?

Select the option to backup to the floppy drive. Because you don't have a
floppy in the drive the browse option should give you access to your hard
drive. Save the whole backup file to your desktop. Remember if you are
backing up to CD each backup must be less than 650MB. The dvd option is
preferable if you have a large amount of data to backup.

As for cross posting it isn't really acceptable (people do it, i know) but
it causes problems when people reply to the posts.

The Micrososft backup routine is really intendd for large networks, in whihc
one does backup from one PC to another (or to a server).

For home PCs, there are many backup programs, but the better ones are not
free, but well worht the price. I have used Norton GHOST (2000 through
2003) and Acronis TrueImage (versions 5 through 7). Both work on XP, if you
have the latest version. GHOST has more bells&whistles, but TrueImage is
easier to use. In particular, TrueImage can backup to external USB and
firewire devices. it has been able to do that for years. Recently GHOST
has begun to claim similar capabilities, but in reality it is touchy about
some combinations of controllers and devices. Both can do CDs, and both
will automatically span media, or break the backup into user-selected
chunks.

Thanks John - this was really helpful guidance. Now I've got the backup file
onto the hard drive (its about 656MB), I can't seem to get it to save on a
CD. It says its copying, but nothing is happening. The CD-writer has worked
before, so I don't know why it doesn't seem to be working in this instance.
Any suggestions?

When using Windows XP's Backup, the total size of the backup file must not
exceed the formatted capacity of the CD (approximately 533MB). If you need to
backup an entire drive or a system volume exceeding 533 MB, you need
to use a third party backup and restore program designed to span the file
over multiple CDs (or backup to a DVD if your have a DVD recorder).

You'll need a third-party CD Recording program, such as Nero,
in order to record and span the backup file to multiple CDs.
