System Updates for XP_Pro

N

Newsgroup

As it happens I was renaming some files and the program also changed the
names for the system files in the root (C) drive, hence next time I boot it
stated that NTDLR etc.. were not found.

I repaired this issue by using the install disk and running repair. The
aftermath it seems is that ie7 & MediaPlayer 11 were 'unloaded' and the
computer does not recognise the previously performed system updates.

The first two problems I fixed by reinstalling the two softwares but now my
microsoft auto update continues to tell me to install MS Window Installer
3.1 (which was already installed). Even when I allow the auto installer to
attempt to reinstall this program, the event fails.

Now, this auto update feature and the MS update site do not recognise my
previous updates nor allow me to reinstall these updates again. How do I
solve this problem and either have my system reinstall the previous updates
or recognise them.

Hope that is reasonably clear... Thanks in advance.

I repaired this issue by using the install disk and running repair.

ALL updates installed *prior* to the Repair need to be reinstalled.

Show hidden files, folders, and system files:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial62.html#winxp

Go to Start > Run > type in

net stop wuauserv
Click OK or press Enter

Using WINDOWS Explorer, navigate to WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore
Delete DataStore.edb
Open the DataStore\Logs subfolder and delete it's contents, too
Now delete the contents of
SoftwareDistribution\Download
and
SoftwareDistribution\EventCache
Close the window

Back to Start > Run > type in

cmd
Click OK or press Enter

At the Command Prompt type in and press Enter after *each* command
Click OK or Yes to the confirmation window after registering wups2.dll

regsvr32 wups2.dll
net start wuauserv
exit

Restart the system
Did the updates come down and install now ?

Go to the manufacturer's web site of the PCMCIA adapter. Or, if it's a
generic adapter that came with the system, the computer manufacturer's
site to see if they have an updated driver for it

IF there is no issue with the adapter, then leave it alone. <w>
