well i am sure there is a reason i need to know why. I will be looking at
bank accounts, surfing, emailing. doesnt matter, it will simply turn off. Not
conducive for working at home in the middle of a word doc etc.

I have a gateway, xp home edition sp2, ie7, i have mcafee no virus dedected.

any clues as to why this keeps happening? also you can hear in my cpu the
fan running at full speed ahead. thanks so much

Your computer is probably overheating and/or there is some other
hardware issue. It is unlikely to be a software cause (like a virus).

Standard disclaimer: I can't see and test your computer myself, so these
are just suggestions based on many years of being a professional
computer tech; suggestions based on what you've written. You should not
take my suggestions as a definitive diagnosis. Testing hardware failures
often involves swapping out suspected parts with known-good parts. If
you can't do the testing yourself and/or are uncomfortable opening your
computer, take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not
your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). If possible, have
all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.

sounds like over heating

you need a program to check the temperatures and fans on your computer.
I recommend Speed Fan.

to start, you might blow out the cob webs and dust bunnies using CANNED air.

what you might try is to
boot into safemode w/networking.

if your system is stable
while you surf the net
in safemode, then it may
not be an issue with your
hardware.

but if it is also unstable
in safemode, then faulty
hardware is the common
denominator.

as a note: keep in mind
that safemode w/networking
will not install any of your
anti virals. so while you are
testing your system, do not
venture to unknown or
questionable websites.

logging into your windows
in safemode, microsoft office,
your bank and microsoft.com
should be enough to test with.
