I have an icon for an old printer, that is long gone and not connected and is
not shown in the control panel etc. How do I remove it from the sytem tray.

Delete the IconStreams and PastIconsStream values from the following
registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\
TrayNotify

Thanks to all. I was able to find an Unistall sitting out there and ran it
and the icon is gone. Thanx anyway.
I will be having another question about printers fairly shortly, maybe
someone can help.

Some programs put entries in the systray by direct entries into registry.
These as well as other described below will show up in MSconfig under
Startup tab.
Start>Run>Msconfig
use the below options to remove most entries. The rest will have to be
removed with special software programs or manually editing registry with
regedit command.
Start>Run>regedit
Use the other options first. talk about this more later.

some programs do this by being located in Startup folder.
If you remove program from Startup folder, entry in registry will be deleted.
Start>All Programs>Startup

Some programs have a place to a put a check mark, Show in Systray.
unchecking can fix those ie remove entry from run entry in registry.
