System tray update icon problem

For some reason the update icon in the system tray has disappeared. There was
a bunch of updates that were downloading and then the icon had gone.
I purposely removed an xp security update from "add/remove programs" to see
if the update icon would come back with an update downloaded and ready to
install. But it seems to have gone for good however upon bootup as the system
tray icons begin to appear the update icon appears then disappears. How can
i get this icon to act properly? TIA

No that did not work.
In Automatic updates "Download updates but let me choose when to install
them is checked" but no icon i n system tray. It was there for but
disappeared. At this point I am tempted to try a repair install and see what
happens.

Wesley,
The winxp installation that I had problems with was one that I copied over
from a previously used hard drive as I was in the process of changing drives.
I reconnected my old drive and the windows update icon in system tray is
there and tells me there are updates to install. I had to repair my copied
installation with the winxp disk with SP2 slipstreamed and the problem came
after that point.

Any icon set to Always Hide or Hide When Inactive will be hidden.

Click on the (chevron) << looking button in the Taskbar notification area to
display the hidden icons.

If not set to Always Hide...

Notification area icons are missing at startup.

Try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play
Device Host service.

It's unchecked.
Click on the (chevron) << looking button in the Taskbar notification area to
display the hidden icons.
There is no chvron visible so it's not that.
Try disabling the SSDP Discovery Service and the Universal Plug and Play
Device Host service.
Have not looked at this yet. Will post back with the outcome of that.

But I will check the other
