System tray - Processes Running But Not appearing

S

srm

I have two programs one via the start menu and one via the registry
that start when my computer runs. I see them in the running process,
but they are not appearing in the System tray. I have killed the
process, restarted, no luck. I also see them to start in MSConfig
program, unchecked them, rechecked them, restarted - no luck. I have
also run some utilties from Kellys Korner (theres a bunch of them so
maybe I missed one) but they still don't appear.

I must be missing a setting that runs the processes but not have them
appearing the the system tray?

Thanks

Shawn

Ramesh:

Thanks for the guidance, but no luck. I tried the different options
and once the icons appeared. Rebotted again and then they disapeared.

I have had the same problem many times and aside from disabling the UPnP (My
Network Places - Hide icons for networked UPnP devices) nothing helped until
the other day when it happened again. The strange part is that it happened
right after I have restored a image. Right after restore, the Icons showed
up properly, the OS decided that I had new drives (which did exist before,
but I guess the WindowsXP works in mysterious ways) which then required me
to reboot and suddenly the Icons would not show. I found this strange so I
re-loaded the Image again and the same thing happened again. I did this many
times with the same result. Mind you, that I was able to make the Icons
appear by turning the UPnP off. This got me thinking that maybe there is a
problem with MBR since that is where the info about the drives is stored.
But where is the connection to Icons not showing? Is it possible that
because the Windows thinks I have some new drives (partitions) that did
exist before I created the Image that it, the Windows is having difficulty
with reading something of the MBR which then creates some delays during boot
which is the time that these programs that are loading?
I then proceeded to use Partition Magic to examine the drive, which I always
taught would also examine the integrity of the MBR - nothing unusual showed
up. For some strange reason I pulled out an old DOS based program called
"Ranish Partition Manager". The program indicated that there is a problem
with the MBR so I allowed the program to make the fix the MBR. --- MY ICONS
ARE BACK!!!
