System tray icon sometimes don't appear

After bootup, sometimes my "DSL connected" icon doesn't appear
in the system tray, but sometimes it does.
I AM actually connected to my DSL every time I boot up though.
What could cause this ? Thanks. Frank

That sometimes happens when you set your system to boot directly to the
desktop, and there is a bunch of "programs" loading up.

It has always booted to the desktop. Is there some other option ?????
I should have 6 icons in sys tray.
1. DSL connected 2. Antivirus 3. my new AT&T custom browser
4. Zone alarm firewall 5. Volume 6. Printer

I don't think they always load in the same order. Is that possible ?
There is one icon that appears briefly and then disappears, "local area
connection"
says "acquiring network address". Is this normal ?

I really want my "DSL connected" icon to be there.

Is there anything I can change ?
Thanks Frank

I'd certainly kill that AT&T browser in a heartbeat, and while they may
be triggered to start in the same order each time by the system, they
will finish loading in what ever order they finish in, they aren't in
any kind of lock step. The "local connection" may be your DSL IP address
being assigned. You may log off and log back on to see if all you icons
"appear", but whether they showed or not is a function of how busy the
system was when the particular app "switched on the icon". Also the
"icons" in the tray are NOT an infalible indication the application is
or is not running. There is many more processes running than the
"notification area"(sys tray's correct name) shows.

This is a known XP problem. One workaround is to logoff
(Start-->Logoff) then log back on. They will all show up.

Google the topic and you'll find other people's workarounds.

From Start | Run type in services.msc. Click OK. Then in the services list
disable either SSDP discovery service, the uPnP service or both.
