System Tools - Disk Cleanup PLEASE HELP!!!

G

Guest

I asked this question once before and the response did not help. Can anyone
PLEASE help me? I am running Windows XP Home.

I run System Tools/Disk Cleanup and I have checked off "Web Client/Publisher
Temporary Files". It never cleans up and the amount of space stays the same
(17,432 KB). All the other things I have checked off, clean up and the
number resets to zero. How do I get this to work? One response I got was to
go to C:/Documents and Settings/user/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files
and delete all the files. I have gone there are there are no files to
delete. That did not help.

That did not help.

Start button --> Run,
Type

services.msc

OK.

Double-click on WebClient service and change the Startup Type to Manual.
Reboot.
Run Disk Cleanup.

If you actually USE the WebClient service - you might want to set it back to
automatic.

Set your WebClient Service back up to automatic and reboot.

Start button --> Run
Type

Regedit

OK.

Go to :
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT WINDOWS\CURRENT VERSION\EXPLORER
VOLUME CACHES\COMPRESS OLD FILES

Export this key - for safety.
Remove all keys under compress old files.

Reboot.
Start Disk Cleanup.
Are you back to 32Kb for Web Client/Publisher files?

You can also use CCleaner..
http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

Very good application for cleaning up the crap that gets on your system.
Very reliable.

Then go back and do the manual setting for the WebClient service if you do
not need it. (Enables Windows-based programs to create, access, and modify
Internet-based files. If this service is stopped, these functions will not
be available. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly
depend on it will fail to start.)
