Any readings on the usability and best pratices on backing up system state,

Best practices: do it regularly, review your backup logs, and test your
restores on spare hardware. Usability? Ideally, you have good server
hardware and won't need to do a disaster recovery restore ever. ;-)

One more thing: where ever (amongst all DCs I have) I back up the system
state, a file is skipped which is ...pre_install_...?
Why so.

The file is in use or something. Everything else working OK?
Do a test restore to spare hardware on a test LAN.
