System sounds will NOT work!

Can someone tell me how to make my system sounds "play"
when their event occurs? I can select them individually
in the sound control, and they play. I have tried saving
them as default, as "my sounds", etc. Nothing happens! My
CD Rom plays audio CD's just fine, and I can play video
clips with sound...just no luck with XP system sounds.
(I'd really like to have a sound play at boot and shut
down). Nothing is "mute", as far as I have found. I have
an older HP scanner that needed a new card to work with
XP. Could this be the problem? Is there something
called "interupt conflict" that would shut off the events
sounds? I'd REALLY appreciate help! Many thanks, Judy

Judy, Judy Judy,

If you are comfortable with editing the registry, run regedit and navigate to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER, if the (Default) is blank in the "Data" column, right-click
and delete the entry. XP will immediately rebuild it with the correct value
"Value not set". Also check HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21 for the same condition.

John

Try the two fixes at line 6, "Restore system default sounds" is
self-explanatory. "Restore the ding .wav file" seems to be a general
..wav sound fixer.
Reboot.
