Hi!, my problem is that the Windows XP sound don't run. The music or wav files sound properly using for example Media Player but sound of the system, for example the messenger sounds don't play. On the system sounds configuration I can play one by one pressing the play button but not autorun with the avent.
If I create a new user all the sounds work properly.

I think that the solution with out creating other user is to enter on the system registry and make some changes.

¿That can I solve this problem?

Thank You...

Sorry for bringing this old discussion back up, but I'm having the same exact
problem as Santi right now...

And many people have led me to

really help me... Does anyone have a solution that has worked for them before?

OK, I have found a solution after searching some more on here.

I found it in
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...-us-ms-winxp&lang=en&cr=US&sloc=en-us&m=1&p=1 , in the post by "Guy":

"Click on the start button. Go to Run Type in regedit

Once registry editor has opened up left click on the Hkey_Current_User key.
In the right hand area you will find a binary string value that says
Name: (default)
Type: REG_SZ
Data: VALUE NOT SET

Now if your data does NOT say value not set simply right click on the
default string and delete. Windows will immedately create you a new
one. Restart your computer and you should hear sounds. "

I've had this missing system sound problem for a couple of months now
and I think with the help of the attached post I have an answer.

I believe the problem is created by the Weather Channel's Desktop
Weather application. Moreover, I suspect it is a bug that triggers when
you have DW set to start with Windows and you reboot when you do NOT
have an internet connection. You may have seen the message You must be
connected to the internet to run Desktop Weather. I think when this
happens DW puts its own path reference into the registry key described
in the following solution. I think this is a bug.

If you have a laptop with a wireless connection, you will almost
certainly get this since there is usually a delay in establishing your
connection after a reboot.

I would recommend that you first uninstall DW. When you do you will get
a short survey as to why you are removing it. Tell them it messed up
your sounds. They have to know this in order to fix it.

After you uninstall DW do the regedit fix as described below. You
probably should reboot, but I noticed on the shutdown side of the reboot
after this fix I heard my long absent Windows exit sound.

BTW, the quickest way I found to determine if you have a similar problem
is to click the little speaker icon in your system tray and try to
change your volume. Most sound schemes play a nice tone when you do
this, but if you have the missing system sound problem you get a rude
speaker beep.

well a good thanx to u because of which my system sound is back.
but plz tell me will it affect any other or current reg. values after so?

well a good thanx to u coz of which my system sounds are back.I think u r
right my prob started after downloading weather channels desktop but after
unstalling i didn't told themwhy am unstalling it?
pz tell also that whether it had affected my other reg values also?

I been without windows sounds for several months...it appears that the
weather channel corrupted the registry. My sound is back as well...sean g

Am not able to install High defination audio drivers after installing
XP.System displaying message that" Should have minimum of Service pack 1" to
install sound drivers.
Is this necessary to have Service pack install???

I had the same problem. Your answer took care of it immediately (without
re-start) Thanks.
