windows seems to be a bit slow and a few programmes are clunky too.

i run a firewall(zonealarm free version) antivirus (EZ) and also spybot
search and destroy from time to time.

my IE security settings are conservative.

someone recommended ACE Utilities Optimize as a way to clean things up and
make the system run like it used to when it was new (i wish).

any recommendations ?

Comrade,

Are you also running SpyBot/Adaware with the latest data definition
files to ensure that you don't have parasites on your computer?

Have you run a full computer virus scan?

Next turn everything off (e.g. ZoneAlarm, anti-virus and just about
everything else). Use Startup Control Panel by Mike Lin (mlin.net) to
easily do this. What percentage is your CPU running at? Check Task
Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del).

Check your services. Turn off unnecessary services like Indexing. That
can be a killer. Do you have any huge temp subdirectories including
Temporary Internet Files? I keep my Internet cache set to 5MB and
automatically empty the temp directories when I boot up. Are you running
low on disk space? How much RAM do you have? Maybe when you first had
your computer you were running just a few programs but adding more
programs over time with a small amount of memory bogged down your
computer. While defrag'ing a disk is helpful, despite claims it will
not produce miracles; it will only produce an incremental improvement.

No single program will miraculously solve all of your problems. Beware
of any programs that make any such claims.
