System shuts down automatically while working on computer

I will be working on my computer fine (Windows XP) and then after about 5-10
minutes my computer automatically shuts down and the screen goes blank. When
I try to reboot, the computer turns on for a couple of seconds then shuts off
automatically.

I am uncertain if this is an issue with the fans on the computer or not.
Your thoughts and what can I do to troublshoot this problem to confirm or
deny if it is the fan issue mentioned above. Many thanks!!
 
when did this start to happen? have you recently installed any new
software or hardware?
