System Shutdown

Sometimes when I try to shutdown XP SP2, it doesn't respond and I have to hit
the power button to shut it off. Does anyone know what could cause this?

Can you describe in more detail where it hangs up? What is on the screen,
and what does it say? Is anything responsive like mouse or keyboard, etc.?

When I click shutdown, it's as if the OS doesn't recognize the command. I can
continue to work on the computer as normal.
