System restore

I have a problem with a program running in th eback ground which makes my
computer very slow when I try to format the system it tells me that there are
programs open and that isn't the case, there are also some programs that I
try to remove and I get this message(C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT the
system file is not suitable for running ms-dos and microsoft windows
aplications
and it gives me the choice to "close" and "Ignore" no matter which one I
choose it does not uninstal the program.
I have windows XP home edition with the AMD 1700 athlon procesor and 512 ram
memory 80 g storage can some one help me please
