System Restore

When I try a system restore in XP Pro to an earlier point
set by the system (which appears to be once daily) I get
a message which tells me the restore cannot be done as
nothing has changed even though I know there have been
changes (adding programs for example).

I am trying to restore my system to a point before a
program I installed caused an error message.

Can someone explain why I cannot restore as advertised?
