System Restore?

Hi,
My UK Compaq PC is original as purchased apart from the installation of
hauppage "freeview" PCI digital TV tuner, and a samsung dual-layer burner
plus a number of video editing applications. Preinstalled Win XP has been
successfully updated with service packs one and two. I run fully subscribed
and updated Norton 2004 anti-virus and firewall, plus spybot.
I use the PC for little other than as a PVR, DVD/CD burning, and surfing.
Apart from some odd annoying software issues all was fine.
This morning on boot as the XP splash screen appeared, across was a
type of progress bar stating that system restore was collecting data for the
restore point that had been selected, or words to that effect and then
followed another screen stating that the system restore to previous
working condition was successful.
There was no obvious problem with my PC, I most certainly didn't select
for a system restore either. Is this something for me to be concerned with?
Does XP auto kick start system restore if it finds problems during some boot
scan?
I am not sure if I checked in the right place, but from start menu I
followed
path to system restore entry in accessories. there appears to be no restore
points apart from one that seems to have been created at, or immediately
after the phantom system restore this morning?
I have this afternoon performed a full system scan with Norton and nothing
found. I then performed a scan with spybot search and destroy, which found
and removed several entries. Otherwise this PC is functioning perfectly.
I found this Newsgroup via a google search, a site then auto configured
this group into outlook express. I have only had the briefiest opportunity
to browse the posts looking for an answer, so my apoligies if this has been
covered before.
Is this auto system restore thing something I should be worried about?

Creating a Restore Point without being asked to is pretty abnormal behavior.
The question is whether it will recur again.
Have you tried rebooting?
Also, since you have no important restore points to lose, try turning off
System Restore, reboot, turn on System Restore, and reboot.

Hi,

Well you came to the right place for support.

No this is by no means normal. As a matter of fact, this is the first
I have heard of this.

Use the Event Viewer to search for System Restore entries.

Go to Start - Run and type eventvwr.msc and press enter.

Click the Source tab to sort by name, look for "sr" and "srservice."

Double-click each of these services, and look at the event description
for the time frame of the restore in question. Post the Description,
EventID and Source of these Event Properties and post them here so we
can take a look.

I cc'ed you also. Make sure to click on the + to the left of the
message you sent to expand it and view any reply's. Please post your
replys to the newsgroup so everyone can view them.
