The files for the checkpoints are held in a folder named System Volume
Information. Moving, renaming or deleting anything in that folder may
render System Restore unusable. There are also Registry entries that are
referenced during a System Restore.
Using Start|Search, and looking for hidden files/folders, I see no System
Volume Information folder. Looking for it with Windows Explorer is null,
too.
