System Restore Checkpoints

F

Fred

On the System Restore Page it says that XP automatically creates restore
points (called System Checkpoints) The only checkpoints I see anywhere are
the ones I make. Where are the Automatically Restore Points stored ? How to
access ?
Thank, Fred

And slower performance if you have any programmes with memory leaks.

As PD43 notes - automatic chekpoints are generated if no other check points
are created within a 24 hour "cumulative" period of operation.

The statement that you should leave your computer on 24/7 to ensure that
system restore points are automatically created is incorrect.

The link below will help you troubleshoot your problem:

To get System Checkpoints, your computer will have to be on longer

It's OK to leave your computer on 24x7... it won't hurt the computer,
and it won't kill you on your electric bill.

If you leave it on 24x7, you will get a daily "checkpoint".

Even if you don't, and you turn your computer off each night, you can still
get them.

That is correct. :)

Well I can understand now why I don't get the auto !!
I usually create one myself before turning off at night !
My system is plenty fast, don't think I have any leaks.
Thanks to all

The super hidden folder \system volume information\ contains the restore
points.
You can get to them (eventually) from the control panel.

If you create one every day, the automatic one is not created, since it's
unnecessary. However, if you don't create one, it should do it for you
every day or so (and you do NOT have to leave your computer on continuously,
as PD43 said)

As someone else noted, they are created after 24 hours of cummulative
operation if one isn't created for any other reason.

Ahhh, I missed that. So amend my every day "or so", to more like every
day or week, at least for most cases :) And if someone only uses
their computer two hours a day, it would be almost two weeks, but it would
then get created.

No you didn't. I said that the system needs to be on 24x7 and you
took exception.

The system does NOT need to be on 24x7 to get automatic backups. I repeat,
the system does NOT need to be left on 24x7 to get automatic backups.

The topic is System Restore Checkpoints, not automatic backups.

Automatic System Restore Checkpoints (for me, used as just one backup
option).
Your turn (but I won't wait up for it :)

You're demonstrating once again how unpleasant you are and how illogical
and puerile your arguments can be.

You tell Bill that automatic backups is not the topic. However, the
first sentence in this thread was "On the System Restore Page it says
that XP automatically creates restore points (called System
Checkpoints)." Got it wrong didn't you!

You say leave the computer on 24/7. You are told that is not necessary
by me ( not Bill originally). You attack Bill not me. Got it wrong
didn't you!

You do not have to leave the computer on 24/7 to get automatically
created restore points. My computer is not on 24/7 and I daily get
automatically created restore points. Got it wrong didn't you!

You accuse Bill "You failed to admit the fact that you are talking about
something completely different from the topic subject (not unusual for
you). Why should he? Got it wrong didn't you!

You say of Bill "YOU are an eccentric user who does an image of your
system before installing a new program." Now to my way of thinking that
is off topic, totally uncalled for and extremely unpleasant. Got it
wrong didn't you!

I think you are more comfy (and more knowledgeable) in:
microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion. Definitely off topic and
childish.

LOL, I doubt it. (And I wouldn't hold my breath. :)
(I'm pretty sure it was (yet another) "whooooosh" moment. :)

Well it has been two days now and no Auto Restore Checkpoint made !! Will
wait another 24hrs and see what happens.

Assuming you have been using your computer each day, I believe it was after
24 hours of accumulated operation time; maybe you haven't accumulated 24
hours of operation yet since the last restore checkpoint. Have you?

For the last two nights I have used Manual Standby.
Task Sched is enabled and running, however I don't have any task running in
it.
Restore Service is enabled and running
Have 65 gbs avaliable.
Will wait another day. If no joy I'll install Bill James's <SysRestorePoint
V11.Zip.
