system restore

Chosen restore points are not accepted when I attempt a system restore on
Win Xp Pro SP3. The process runs through to a reboot but then announces
that the restore hasn't happened. Is there any way of forcing a restore
point to be accepted? How can it be made to work?

Bill

There is no way you can force System Restore to work. And because you've
included no information about your computer I can't tell you why System
Restore *isn't* working. Usual reasons are having a Norton product
installed and/or infection. I also can't tell you how to fix your computer
because you haven't said what you are trying to correct with System
Restore.

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

There are three problems. One, ongoing ever since I started using a Dell
monitor -and in spite of installing its driver, is that the icons
periodically jump to different positions none of the available restore apps
restore them completely. The second is that the desktop background colour
sometimes changes to a scheme I've never chosen. Lastly, after an hour or
so of inactivity, the screen sometimes will not wake up when the mouse
/keyboard is used but immediately goes into an energy save mode i.e. black,
and stays that way until the PC is switched off.

The unavailability of system restore compounds the annoyance as it might
just provide a solution. There are no reported spyware/virus/malware issues
from , from time to time, Malwarebytes, PC Tools antivirus, AVG.
