System Restore

B

Bernie

Hi, I ran an update to my firewall today that's caused a bunch of problems
(it failed, and deleted/corrupted a few bits on the way, to the extent my
network connection is dead). I want to do a system restore to "undo" this.
BUT the restore is failing ("unspecified error" - always a helpful
description). I've caught a noticed appearing out of the task bar that
suggests rstrui.exe is corrupted. How can I replace/update this file,
bearing in mind this PC no longer has a network connection (and therefore no
access to the internet) ?
Many thanks in advance,

Bernie

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the reply.

I've tried it, nothing has happened. Any advice ?

Bernie,
I don't know what you mean by "nothing has happened".
Were you able to run sfc \scannow?

Have you tried to run SR in safe mode?

I'm being very literal here - I typed in the comment, the dialog box went
away, and nothing came up.

I am a little slow when it comes to the more advanced stuff - can you guide
my through starting rstrui in safe mode ?

thanks, B

Me again with a quick update.
I managed to "run as adminstrator" sfc.exe, and a dos prompt screen flashed
up then disappeared before I could read it. So still not entirely as it
should be.
Any help at this point would be gratefully received.

restart computer, repeatedly tap F8 key at boot up, you will be diverted to
Safe Mode menu, select "Safe Mode," and do your System Restore from there.
Restart to return to normal mode.

Thanks to you all for your help. I didn't get a chance to try restoring
through safe mode, although at least I know how to do it should I need to.
My PC was under warranty, so I'd been talking to their tech support (this
forum was much more useful!), and when they couldn't diagnose or fix it over
the phone they sent a nice man out. It was a corruption of Vista that was
the problem so he ran an F10 recovery. Possibly a severe remedy, and it's
taken me the best part of all day to reload my other software and files, but
it's working better than before (possibly as it's a clean install, not full
of manufacturer's helpful extra software...).
Thanks again for everything.
