Hello, I'm new to this forum. I want to be able to take
a snapshot of my system (XP-Home) so I can do a System
Restore at a later date if necessary. I can't find the
procedure to do the initial Save (or whatever it's
called). Any suggestions are appreceiated. Vic

Vic, you should have started a new thread, otherwise your news message may
be ignored in favour of responding to the original query. Secondly, your
question of how to create a Restore Point is pretty straight forward. Start
All Programmes > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. On the
opening page, make sure the 2nd option is bullet marked (in the circle) then
click Next. Your will be given a textbox to fill in. Put in something that
will remind you in future this particular moment when you might have reason
to return here; usually it is, say, just before installing a Windows
critical update, or new software downloaded from the web. These are
instances where things can go drastically wrong. Difficult to explain but
once you have seen it works a few times, you will become adroit with
choosing an appropriate short reminder after the initial --- unavoidable ---
blunders! Click Next and exit. Read a fuller account from Help and Support
type in System Restore in Search box. Don't worry if you make mistakes;
the old ones are removed as the new ones are created. There is no harm
doing some experimentation first; create a restore point here now and
Restore back to here at some time tomorrow. Good luck.

Thanks Bee. Yhe problem is that as soon as I
click "system restore" from the systems tools group, I
get an error saying it can't find "winsta.dll."

It never gives me a chance to create a restore point.

Thanks so far. Any other suggestions?

_ Try installing or re-installing XP Service Pak 1. Sounds like you possibly
have some file file versions out of synch. After installing be sure to
check for and re-apply/apply and critical updates. Let me know- Also heres a
link to the always updated FAQ for System Restore- thnx-

Voila! Thanks for the FAQ link, I read EVERY word. It
turned out that doing a re-install on XP Service Pack-1
did the trick. I don't know what got corrupted, but
reloading SP-1 cleared the problem.
Thanks for the help!
Vic
