Is there any way of protecting a perfect system restore
from being overwritten over time, or even saving it to
another medium?

You really need a different backup system if you want to save one
point on its own, but keep in mind that after a while the backup may
no longer be usable because of other changes on the computer.

You can keep versions of ntbackup on their own (the default). I like
erunt.zip as my secondary backup because sometimes system restore
fails.

If ntbackup isn't on your system, it should be on the restore disk in
an area called something like ValueAdded. Or someone here can give you
an URL where it can be downloaded.
